Exploding Volcanoes
Jacqui - Brixham - 14 July 2008
If you're doing the theme 'Bible Mountains' from the Messy Church book this is a great idea, suggested by one of our teenagers who made one at school. Out of the many craft activities I have run it was definitely the most fun, messy, popular and exciting - we even had a queue of older lads desperate for a second go! Need to make one yourself first.
You will need per child: 1 small (half litre) empty plastic fizzy bottle (can also have a couple of large ones to make big explosion together), round foil tray to catch 'lava' ,about 3 tbs bicaronate of soda or baking power, about 3 tbs vinegar, red, yellow or orange food colouring, large card circles (or let children make by drawing round plate) and to share: masses of newspapers to mop up mess, spoons, funnels, scissors, sellotape and felt pens.
(1) Cut card cones to fit bottle, decorate like mountains with trees, rocks, paths and sellotape firmly together with neck of bottle peeking over top.
(2) measure bicarb into bottle
(3) add a couple of drops of colouring
(4) pour over vinegar
(5) count down to explosion!
Red hot lava will bubble up realistically a couple of times before erupting over the side and causing mayhem. Very addictive! Have since found this idea on enchantedlearning.com more clearly explained and they use washing up liquid which could be interesting ...
