South Africa

09 February 2010

Jean Pienaar from South Africa has been in touch about starting up a Messy Church in her own community. And now they've done it! Here's part of her email. Try not to feel envious of the weather:

'Our Messy Christmas went off remarkably well in December, and all people (young and old) enjoyed themselves more than they thought they would! It was intentional to keep it small, especially as a "trial run", and we had about 25 folk enjoy the afternoon. Our schools broke up for their summer holiday at the beginning of December, and traditionally Johannesburg is extremely quiet at that time of the year, as everyone flocks to the coast, or home. Most who attended were directly linked to the parish, but we felt that we also needed to let our own parishioners "taste" the experience so that they can invite friends etc. next time.

'One thing I did battle with, and wonder whether you have some bright ideas... everyone was having such a great time doing the crafts (and wanting to finish off) that it was a struggle to get them into the church for the worship part to begin. Any creative ideas on how to do this without becoming too much like school?

'And now we are putting together our programme for Saturday, 20th Feb... We have a few ideas we want to implement to reach into those who live in gated communities (a lot of people in this part of Johannesburg) and beyond the regular congregation. The church is also slightly off the beaten track, so we are trying to be innovative in this regard.

All the best, Jean!'
