Messy Church in Coughton

Pat Newbold - St Peter's Coughton, Coughton, Warwickshire - 30 November 2009

Thank you for the super newsletter. I have sent it on to lots of people!

I was really interested to hear about the Messy Churches attached to schools.

There are some pictures of ours on the Coughton school website (www.coughtonschool.org) but it was great to hear of others.

Mess in School

Jane Leadbetter - Liverpool - 18 October 2009

Jane Leadbetter and her energetic team up in Liverpool were invited to take Messy Church, in the guise of Messy Families, into a local (non-church) primary school. She had asked for prayer as she was feeling rather nervous about the whole thing. Here's her email:

'Well what an exciting day! 120 of us at first Messy Families in Greenbank Primary School with cooks making autumn veg soup & delish puds and we changed the Messy Meal time with the Celebration time to accommodate them. Worked OK as screens across the hall meant we could carry on while cooks finished off to go home before 6pm. Families loved the autumn crafts and leaders too. Headteacher should have been in a governors' meeting but stayed with us as she enjoyed it all so much. She said it was the best thing that had happened to the school. Superb staff and messy caretaker. Tried Janet's idea and made programmes which worked well. Got to get the registration better next time as staff had everyone in a holding area between school ending and coming to us. We didn't know and so "all at once" registration was a pain.

'Head giving us a catalogue to buy anything we need and said it's the only time she has managed to get parent/carers into the school so successfully other than the Spring Fayre. She is very excited about getting to know them better. No other opportunities for the school to do this. So thumbs up all round. Made sure I didn't have gelatine in any sweets in the spider cakes and asked advice about Muslim traditions. Two muslim dads put on aprons and joined in the veggie printing. Also joined in the song.
