The Messy Church® name and logo are registered trade marks of The Bible Reading Fellowship (BRF).
Messy Church is a church, not a craft club, that helps people encounter Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
Messy Church values are about being Christ-centred, for all ages, based on creativity, hospitality and celebration.
If your Messy Church subscribes to these values we are very happy for you to use our Messy Church name and logo, so long as this is within certain parameters. We understand that ideas need to be contextualised for your local church/situation and this may therefore involve adapting certain elements of Messy Church. However we want to ensure that the core values of Messy Church are maintained by churches using the name and/or logo. We would therefore ask that before you call something 'Messy Church', you ensure that you're clear what Messy Church is and that using the name is appropriate in your context.
A useful touchstone for you might be to ask yourself what a family would feel if they came to your Messy Church after belonging to a Messy Church that has the values above: would they recognise it as part of the same 'family'?
If the activity you are running doesn't subscribe to these values you are welcome to use the ideas and resources you find on this website, but you may not use our Messy Church name and logo.
Please note that we do reserve the absolute right to withdraw use of the Messy Church name and logo if at any time we become aware of anything within your Messy Church that conflicts with our Messy Church values, or that we believe might damage the reputation of Messy Church or BRF. In particular we are passionate about protecting children and young people, and as a Messy Church you must adhere to health and safety and safeguarding laws and guidelines and have an established health and safety and safeguarding policy in place which you can provide on request. BRF cannot be held responsible for any matters relating to health and safety or safeguarding in respect of any Messy Church.
Can I use the name Messy Church for a bank account?
If you're opening a bank account for your Messy Church, please make it easy for the bank by opening it with a name that makes it very clear that it is your Messy Church, as there may be several Messy Church accounts in the same bank. So the account name 'Messy Church' would be bad. 'Messy Church St Oswald's Henfield' would be good.
Publicity materials from Christian Publishing and Outreach (CPO)
Christian Publishing and Outreach (CPO) is an organisation that produces church publicity materials and resources for outreach and evangelism. CPO has produced a range of publicity materials for Messy Churches under a licensing agreement with BRF. If you don't have the resources available to design Messy Church posters, leaflets or banners yourself, then CPO provides a solution that is quick and easy. Within the range of Messy Church materials available from CPO there is also an opportunity to create bespoke versions.
If you buy Messy Church resources from CPO you are also supporting BRF's Messy Church ministry, which is funded almost entirely through donations and grants. Income generated via the sale of Messy Church publications and CPO resources makes a modest but important contribution towards enabling us to resource our Messy Church ministry.
Can I produce my own publicity materials using the Messy Church logo?
If you wish to produce a poster/leaflet/banner for your own church's use, using the Messy Church logo, this is fine with us. You can design your own poster, leaflet or banner and get this printed by your local printer, so long as you follow our requirements about how the Messy Church logo appears. We stipulate that you must not change the logo in any way and that you send us a copy of how you're using it. (It's always nice to see what good ideas different churches come up with anyway!)
Can I sell my own Messy Church publicity materials to other churches?
If you or your church decide that you'd like to sell the Messy Church poster / leaflet / banner you have produced to other churches then you cannot do so without our consent and a licensing agreement with BRF. You must contact us first - please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
What happens if a printer wants to produce and sell Messy Church publicity items?
If a printer is asked to produce a poster / leaflet / banner for an individual / church then this is fine. However, if a printer wants to start selling more of these posters / leaflets / banners to other churches they cannot do so without our consent and a licensing agreement with BRF. They must contact us first - please email email@example.com.
What about aprons, clothing items and mugs?
The same principles apply as outlined above. A range of items is available from CPO but if what you would like is not part of their range, or you want to design your own item containing the Messy Church logo then, subject to our agreement, you may produce this yourself - for you and your church's use only. We will need to approve the item before you arrange for it to be printed / produced. If you wish to be able to sell the item to other churches you cannot do so without our consent and a licensing agreement with BRF. You must contact us first - please email firstname.lastname@example.org..
The above points provide a list of uses of our marks that are acceptable. If what you want to do is not on the list then please contact us via email@example.com for approval. If what you want to do is not on the list and you have not gained our approval then it is likely that your proposed use of our marks will infringe our rights.
We are committed to protecting our trade marks and will take action against any infringers should it be necessary.

If you download this material for your own use, you must respect the following requirements:
Changing the logo
Do not change the content in any way, including (but not restricted to) colouring, fonts and aspect ratio. Printing a black and white version of the logo where colour printing is not possible or viable does not constitute a colour change.
Using the logo online
If the logo is used online as part of a webpage (or otherwise), please put 'Messy Church Logo Copyright The Bible Reading Fellowship © 2016. See www.messychurch.org.uk' at the bottom of the page, and if possible (and appropriate) hyperlink the logo to www.messychurch.org.uk.
The Messy Church logo must always show up well when displayed, so avoid backgrounds that clash, are red or brown, or are too busy.
Please ensure that the Messy Church logo is at least 15mm across when printed.
In order to make sure that the logo remains clear and legible it must be surrounded by an exclusion zone as indicated.
Do not overprint or add layers above the image.
As a rough guide, try to ensure that the logo is surrounded by a clear space of 20% of the width of the logo. For example, if the logo is 5 cm across when printed, keep 1 cm clear around it.
Quality and aspect ratio
Please ensure that you download the appropriate version of the Messy Church logo. The image should be crisp, not fuzzy. If you find the image becomes fuzzy, we suggest you download a higher quality version. Always resize an image to make it smaller, rather than bigger, to avoid this.
Please ensure that you do not stretch the image in either direction, as indicated. To avoid this, we suggest you resize the image as a whole, adjusting both height and width at the same time, to maintain the aspect ratio. If a particular size is required, we suggest you search online for an aspect ratio calculator, such as this one.
Printing the logo
- If you plan to use the logo in a professionally printed flyer or other printed advertising material, please send a proof of the flyer to us electronically at firstname.lastname@example.org before printing.
- If you are interested in using the logo in a professional magazine or newspaper (such as a news item or feature) please contact us to request permission.
Other use of the logo
- If you plan to use the logo on any other item, this is subject to our approval which must be obtained before printing/production. Please contact us to request permission.
- The above points provide a list of uses of our marks that are acceptable. If what you want to do is not on the list then please contact us for approval. If what you want to do is not on the list and you have not gained our approval then it is likely that your proposed use of our marks will infringe our rights. We are committed to protecting our trade marks and will take action against any infringers should it be necessary.
