On the last day of the Messy Church conference in Canada, we heard this story from Neil Mancor, who is minister of the Anglican Parish of St George, Ste Anne-de-Bellevue, QC. Neil is also Regional Coordinator for Messy Church in Quebec, Ottawa, Maritimes.

Why describing Messy Church as 'church' is important

Who would have thought it? We’ve always had to defend the word ‘messy’ in conversation with church leaders, at training events and in our books; and there’s no doubt there will always be those who will find it just too uncomfortable an adjective for anything to do with church. However, lately I’ve come across a new challenge on my travels. It’s not the ‘messy’ that some people object to but the word ‘church’ itself. This has set me thinking. Why is it important that it’s Messy Church and what are the implications behind this possibly controversial description?

There is no doubt that social media can be a great gift to the church and the gospel. Indeed, Messy Church growth owes a lot to its Facebook family of loyal followers; but there can be drawbacks. The pressure to post our stories or tweet our events can sometimes give the impression of an uninterrupted narrative of smiles and success. We don’t so easily make public our failures and disappointments.
